 Trail Conditions
Date: February 2 2012  Club: Eastman SnoPALS  Status: Most Trails are open for 2011-2012 season.
 Status of Trails:

Most major trails have been groomed in the Lac du Bonnet, Pinawa and Whitemouth areas.  Caution is still advised on all trails as they are very rough.

Last Grooming Lac du Bonnet Area Trails:

30 January

Groomed Red Deer trail north from Lac du Bonnet to the power line before recent snow fall

31 January

Groomed trail from Lac du Bonnet to Half Way Hut and across swamp to the Centerline Trail.

1 February

Groomed from Lac du Bonnet through by-pass to Seddons Corners via the Centerline Trail in Agassiz Forest included Betker Trail.

2 February

Grooming underway from Lac du Bonnet on the Rail Bed south west, groomed nearly to the Ridge Riders Hut and returning

 Last Grooming Pinawa Area Trails:

30 January

Groomed to beginning of Pellow Freeway near PTH 11 west of Seven Sisters but not to PTH 44 and beyond because of equipment failure.  The trail south from Julius has not yet been fully groomed and should be considered as CLOSED

30 January

Groomed King's trail to Old Pinawa and west to junction in bush to the west, groomed both ways

31 January

Groomed the 520 Trail and AECL cutline trail to Lac du Bonnet.

1 February

Groomed Hell's gate from PTH 11 to Half Way Hut

 Last Grooming Whitemouth Area Trails:

31 January

Groomed from Whitemouth to Elma and beyond to the Silver Bridge that connects to the Whiteshell Trails

1 February

Groomed from Whitemouth north to Hydro line and Parks trail and returned to Whitemouth.  There is peat moss burning at Blaney's ditch, visibility MAY be hampered.  This burning will be ongoing for the rest of the season.

 Notables:

February 2  2012

Most of the trails have now been groomed except as noted in the individual sections above.  Recent snowfall on Monday evening January 30-31 has helped considerably but current above normal temperatures with sun will soon be causing major deterioration as melting occurs.   Many trails are still rough and without a good base and CAUTION is still advised on these trails.

A short section of the Centerline By-pass trail was relocated back to the original location.  It had been moved on January 1, 2010 to accommodate logging operations in the area.  The alternate trail while useable was very narrow and somewhat unsafe.  All required signage has been posted; the previously used trail is now posted as closed.

January 15 2011

Eastman SnoPALS thanks the Lee River SnowRiders for the assistance given to assist our club on January 28th in an attempt to open the Riverland Road Trail.  Our groomer was mired in snow the week previously.

Unfortunately, their unit was unable to succeed on this trail either because of the deep snow, the narrow trail nature and the danger from the hydro poles.

IMPROVEMENTS 2009 - 2010

Eastman SnoPALS members are in the process of making much needed trail improvements in several sections of our system.  These improvements consist mostly of mechanical brushing to widen trails and make them safer.  The main areas of improvements have been on the trail south of Julius to the Springfield Trail, the Railbed Trail and the Centerline Trail in the Agassiz Forest.

During January and February brushing improvements were made to the trails going north and south from Whitemouth.  There is now sufficient space for two snowmobiles meet and pass safely by each other on these trails.

All of the work of hand brushing, signing and grooming is performed by our volunteers. Many of our members are retired individuals that do this work so that you can enjoy our winter wonderland. They have been doing this work for many years and they can not go on forever. Age is taking its toll on our older members as well. We need more help to help make a good trail system.

In the attached link is a short video (3MEGS) of some of our volunteers getting the new groomer ready for the coming season.

Please consider coming forward to join our club and / or volunteer your time, it will be appreciated.  Go to our membership page for more details.
